IMMEDIATE NEWS RELEASE
SEASONAL WEIGHT RESTRICTIONS
March 2, 2026
The Trempealeau County Highway Department advises that “Seasonal Weight Restrictions” will be imposed on the Trempealeau County Trunk Highway System beginning Thursday, March 5, 2026, The signing will begin at 6:00 am. The posted limit will become effective once the sign are in place.
This is a critical period of time for the county highways and we request support and cooperation for this temporary load limit. Trempealeau County will be enforcing the posted seasonal weight limits and penalties may be imposed under Sec. 348.21, Wis. Statutes for violations
Spring Weight Limit Restrictions are a necessity for the economic longevity and immediate structural stability of highways that, without restrictions, would seriously deteriorate when the underlying ground is weak and mushy from melting frost. Restrictions will remain in effect until all highways have regained their strength, typically 5 to 8 weeks.
Weather dependent, Weight Restrictions will be imposed on all County Trunk Highways within the next two to four weeks, with the exception of the roads listed on Attachment A.
These weight restrictions are for County Trunk Highways Only. Any weight on State, City and Village or Town roads are handled by each individual entity. The seasonal weight restrictions for Trempealeau County Highways are as follows:
|
Total Number of Axles |
Maximum Gross Weight |
|
Two (2) Axles |
8 Ton (16,000 lbs.) |
|
Three (3) or More Axles (Straight Truck) |
13 Ton (26,000 lbs.) |
|
Combination Vehicle (Tractor & Trailer) |
18 Ton (36,000 lbs.) |
Signs will be placed at strategic intersections advising the public of specific weight restrictions in effect on the particular highway. Please watch for the signs!
Under Section 349.16(3) exemptions may be made to allow for vehicles carrying those commodities of which are used to perform necessary and vital services for the public health, safety and welfare. All over weight vehicles are subject to these restrictions unless exempted. Special concessions on overweight loads may be made in emergency situations on a case by case basis.
Thank You for your cooperation and understanding!
